B737-500

The Boeing 737-500 is part of the Classic 737 series (which also includes the 737-300 and 737-400). It was designed for short- to medium-haul flights. Key points:

  • First flight: 1989

  • Passenger capacity: Typically 110–132 passengers

  • Range: About 2,950 nautical miles (5,460 km)

  • Engines: Two CFM56-3 turbofan engines

  • Role: Smaller, more efficient replacement for older 737-200s, suited for airlines needing a short-range jet with lower capacity

  • Notable airlines: Southwest Airlines (historically), USAir, and others

Compared to the 737-300 and 737-400, the -500 is shorter and carries fewer passengers, but it has similar systems and cockpit layout, making it easier for pilots to transition between models.
