Istanbul Airport Launches Triple Independent Runway Operation—A First in Europe

Istanbul, Türkiye — Beginning tomorrow, Istanbul Airport will implement a groundbreaking aviation system known as the “Triple Simultaneous Independent Runway Operation.” This marks the first time such a system is being introduced anywhere in Europe.

Under this innovative setup, three aircraft will be able to take off or land at the same time on three completely independent runways. This advancement is expected to significantly enhance both the efficiency and capacity of flight operations at one of the world’s busiest hubs.

The system allows for increased traffic handling without compromising safety, as the runways operate independently of each other, reducing delays and optimizing the airport’s performance.

This milestone not only positions Istanbul Airport at the forefront of global aviation innovation but also reinforces Türkiye’s strategic role in connecting continents.

A First for Europe

While the concept of multiple independent runways is already in use at some of the world’s most advanced airports—such as Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson and Chicago O’Hare in the United States—Istanbul Airport is the first in Europe to adopt and implement this complex system.

This initiative showcases Türkiye’s ambition to be a pioneer in aviation innovation and reflects Istanbul Airport’s growing importance as a strategic global hub connecting Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Istanbul Airport, which opened in 2018 and has continued expanding its capacity and infrastructure since, is poised to become one of the largest airports in the world by passenger traffic. With the launch of the triple runway operation system, it further cements its reputation as a leader in innovation, safety, and operational excellence.

The aviation world will be watching closely as Istanbul sets a new benchmark in airport efficiency—a model that could soon be replicated across other major airports globally.
